Professor Azhar Md. Zain
Azhar Md. Zain became a doctor in 1982 and subsequently graduated as a psychiatrist from the University of Malaya in 1988. Subsequently he became interested in the area of psychological treatment and rehabilitation and spent some time in England to get extra training in these areas. He worked at the Horton Hospital near London at the Behaviour Modification and Rehabilitation Unit as Visiting Clinical Fellow where he was also attached to the hospital's Psychotherapy Unit.

He also trained in Cognitive Psychotherapy from the University of Oxford and is currently a certified therapist recognized by the British Association of Behaviour and Cognitive Psychotherapists and the British Psychological Society.His work in these areas has been expressed through research, paper presentations and journal publications.

He has published more than 100 papers in refereed professional journals, produced videos for students and has written chapters in four books including one published in North America. He has also written more than 100 proceedings and abstracts and has made more than 100 presentations both nationally and internationally. In 2001, he was appointed Professor at the Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, UPM. In the same year he was also made the Deputy Dean of Academics and Clinical Medicine and later the Dean of the same faculty.

On the academic side, he has been involved in developing the psychiatric curriculum since the early nineties both for undergraduates and postgraduates. He has trained postgraduate students who have since become psychiatrists. He has also been involved as external examiner in psychiatry both for undergraduate and postgraduate examinations including overseas. He has also conducted workshops on CBT training for doctors and psychiatrists locally and abroad.

He is also active in professional organizations and is a committee member of the Malaysian Medical Association. He is also the editor of the Medical Journal of Malaysia as well as the Editorial Advisory Board Member of the Asian Doctor Journal, Journal of Muslim Mental Health. He is also the Chief Editor and founder of the Malaysian Journal of Medicine and Health Sciences. His expertise is also sought as reviewer for many professional psychiatric and medical journals locally and abroad.

Currently, Professor Dr. Azhar Md. Zain is with the Department of Psychiatry of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of University Putra Malaysia.
